Is the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV Level 2 Charger Plug-In?

If you recently purchased a new Chevrolet Equinox EV and plan to charge it at home, you may wonder whether you need to plug in the Level 2 charging equipment or hardwire it into your electrical system.

For the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the answer is straightforward: the available Dual Level Charge Cord is a plug-in charging cable, not a hardwired charger. It can use either a standard 120-volt outlet for Level 1 charging or a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet for Level 2 charging. That distinction matters because a plug-in Level 2 setup and a hardwired home charging station require different electrical installations.

Is the Equinox EV Level 2 Charger Plug-In?

The Chevrolet Equinox EV can use a Dual Level Charge Cord with interchangeable plugs. Chevrolet Canada provides a three-prong 120-volt plug for Level 1 charging and a four-prong NEMA 14-50 plug for Level 2 charging. Drivers connect the charging cord to a control box and attach the appropriate plug based on the outlet they plan to use.

So if you want to use the included Dual Level Charge Cord for Level 2 charging, you do not hardwire the charging cord directly into your home’s electrical system. Instead, you need a properly installed 240-volt receptacle.

What Outlet Does the Level 2 Cord Use?

For Level 2 charging with the Dual Level Charge Cord, use a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet. The four-prong plug attaches to the charging control box and then connects to the 240-volt receptacle. This setup can provide charging up to 7.7 kW, depending on the vehicle and charging conditions. The same charging cord can also be configured for Level 1 charging.

Level 1

  • 120 volts
  • NEMA 5-15 three-prong plug
  • Up to 1.4 kW

Level 2

  • 240 volts
  • NEMA 14-50 four-prong plug
  • Up to 7.7 kW with the Dual Level Charge Cord

This makes the Dual Level Charge Cord useful if you want one portable cable that can handle both charging levels.

Does the 240-Volt Outlet Need to Be Hardwired?

No. An electrician installs the outlet as part of your home’s electrical system, and you plug the Dual Level Charge Cord into that outlet. This setup differs from a dedicated hardwired wall charger. The Dual Level Charge Cord uses a 240-volt receptacle, while a professional electrician can connect certain wall chargers directly to your home’s electrical wiring.

So there are two separate setups:

Portable Dual Level Charge Cord:

  • Electrical panel → 240V circuit → NEMA 14-50 outlet → charging cord → Equinox EV

Hardwired wall charger:

  • Electrical panel → hardwired charger → Equinox EV

Both provide Level 2 charging, but each uses a different installation method.

How Does the Dual Level Charge Cord Work?

The charging equipment uses a control box connected to the vehicle charging cable. You can change the plug assembly on the other side to match the outlet.

  • For Level 1 charging, install the 120-volt three-prong plug.
  • For Level 2 charging, install the 240-volt NEMA 14-50 plug.

Chevrolet specifically instructs owners to fully seat the interchangeable plug in the control box before they begin charging. The plugs fit tightly into the control box by design, so owners should not swap them while the system has power.

Does the 2026 Equinox EV Need a Hardwired Charger for Level 2?

No. The Equinox EV can use the portable Dual Level Charge Cord for Level 2 charging. However, the vehicle itself has a considerably higher maximum AC charging capability than the portable cord provides. The Equinox EV can accept up to 11.5 kW of Level 2 AC charging when paired with an appropriate, professionally installed 60-amp dedicated charging station. That charging equipment is sold separately.

This creates an important distinction:

Portable Dual Level Charge Cord:
240V NEMA 14-50 → up to 7.7 kW

11.5-kW home charging station:
Dedicated 240V installation → up to 11.5 kW

So you don’t need a hardwired charger for Level 2 charging, but a higher-power home installation can charge faster.

Which Setup Should You Use?

That depends on how you plan to charge the Equinox EV. If you already have a properly installed NEMA 14-50 outlet in a suitable location, the Dual Level Charge Cord gives you a straightforward Level 2 charging option. It’s also portable.

You can remove the cord and take it with you rather than having the charging equipment permanently attached to the wall. A hardwired Level 2 charger makes more sense when you want a permanent home charging installation and want to take advantage of the Equinox EV higher AC charging capability. The two options aren’t interchangeable for installation.

What Electrical Circuit Is Required?

The Dual Level Charge Cord’s 240-volt configuration is designed to operate on a dedicated 40-amp or greater circuit. Chevrolet also recommends having a qualified electrician verify that the NEMA 14-50 receptacle and circuit are suitable for EV charging.

This matters because a 240-volt outlet being physically present does not automatically mean it is appropriate for EV charging. The circuit, wiring, breaker and receptacle all need to be suitable for the intended charging load. Chevrolet specifically advises against using wall adapters or extension cords with the Dual Level Charge Cord.

Can You Use a Normal 120-Volt Outlet Instead?

Yes. The Dual Level Charge Cord can be configured for Level 1 charging using its 120-volt plug. That allows the Equinox EV to charge from a standard three-prong household outlet, provided the outlet and circuit are appropriate for the charging load. The tradeoff is charging speed.

Level 1 charging is up to 1.4 kW, compared with up to 7.7 kW using the portable cord’s Level 2 configuration.  For someone who drives relatively little each day, Level 1 may be sufficient. A driver who wants to replenish more range overnight may prefer Level 2.

What About an 11.5-kW Hardwired Charger?

The Chevrolet Equinox EV has an onboard charging system that can accept up to 11.5 kW of Level 2 AC charging. Chevrolet states that achieving that rate requires a professionally installed 11.5-kW AC/60-amp dedicated charging station, which is sold separately.  This is therefore not the same equipment as the portable Dual Level Charge Cord.

An 11.5-kW home charger connects permanently to your home’s electrical system instead of plugging into a NEMA 14-50 receptacle.

What Should You Check Before Installing Level 2 Charging?

Before having a 240-volt outlet installed, check:

  1. Where the Equinox EV will normally be parked.
  2. Whether the electrical panel has sufficient capacity.
  3. Whether you can install a dedicated circuit.
  4. The distance between the panel and charging location.
  5. Whether you want portable 7.7-kW charging or a higher-power permanent charger.
  6. Whether the installation complies with applicable electrical requirements.

A qualified electrician can determine the appropriate installation for the home.

Keep Your Chevy Equinox EV Fully Charged

The Chevrolet Equinox EV Dual Level Charge Cord is a plug-in for Level 2 charging. You attach the 240-volt NEMA 14-50 plug to the control box and plug it into a properly installed 240-volt receptacle.

You do not need to hardwire the portable charging cord. For higher 11.5-kW AC charging, Chevrolet specifies a separate, professionally installed 60-amp charging station.

So the simple answer is: a NEMA 14-50 outlet for the portable Level 2 cord; hardwired installation only if you choose a separate higher-power wall charger.
