Electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity around Maple Ridge and beyond as EV technology improves, and more and more drivers understand how important it is to drive eco-friendly. Recently, General Motors (GM) revealed its new modular platform and Ultium batteries. What sets Ultium batteries apart from other options on the market? Go North Surrey GM dives into this topic and more in the guide below.
What are Ultium Batteries?
GM teamed up with LG Energy Solution to develop Ultium batteries. These batteries are designed using different battery chemistry than many of the other EV batteries currently being used. Ultium batteries use substantially less cobalt, which is significantly more expensive than other battery chemicals. According to industry experts, for an EV to be as affordable as its ICE counterpart, the cost of the battery should be under $100/kWh. This is the case with Ultium batteries. GM will be able to produce EVs that are priced much lower, opening up the EV segment to a much wider market.
Additional Ultium Battery Benefits
Along with the lower cost of production, there are other benefits of outfitting EVs with Ultium batteries. Less space is needed for this type of battery, which opens up design possibilities for GM’s creative team. Another element that sets Ultium batteries apart is the fact that they can contain either vertically- or horizontally-stacked cells to integrate into vehicle design. A vertical design would be used for trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, while a horizontal design would be used for cars and performance vehicles. EVs can now be even bolder, more comfortable, and more aerodynamic than ever before for your Coquitlam drives.
What else can you expect from Ultium batteries?
- A GM-estimated electric range up to 450 miles on a full charge with 0-60 mph in as fast as 3 seconds
- Energy ranges from 50 to more than 200 kWh
- Compatibility with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive configurations
Which GM Vehicles will Offer Ultium Batteries?
GM vehicles that are currently in the works to receive Ultium batteries include the following:
- GMC Hummer EV
- Cadillac LYRIQ
- Silverado electric pickup
