What Are the Different EV Charging Options?

If you’re considering an electric vehicle (EV), like the Chevy Bolt EV or Bolt EUV, you might be wondering about your charging options. There are three levels of EV charging: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. They vary in terms of charging speed and power. So, when you purchase a Chevy EV, you’ll have options for how you’ll charge your car at home and on the go. For your reference, the team at Go North Surrey GM has broken down the basics for each charging level, so you can decide which makes the most sense for your commute.

Level 1, 2, & 3 Charging Levels

Level 1 Charging: 120-Volt

Electric vehicles come standard with this type of portable cable. It plugs into a standard household outlet, so you can charge your EV from home. On average, a 120-volt (AC) power outlet supplies an output of about 1.3 kW to 2.4 kW.

Level 2 Charging: 240-Volt

Through Charged by Chevrolet, Eligible customers in Canada can receive full coverage of the installation costs of a Level 2 charging home outlet. This is the NEMA 14-50 Outlet, which is also known as a Dryer Plug. The charge rate ranges from 7.2 kW to 11.5 kW, depending on the amp breaker you have. With the proper equipment, 2022 Chevy Bolt models can obtain up to 60 kilometres of range for every hour they’re plugged in.

Level 3 DC Charging

Level 3 DC charging is capable of up to 55 kW of charging power. For every 30 minutes (not per hour like Level 1 or Level2) of charging, the Level 3 charger will add up to 160 kilometres. This level of charging will keep your EV going, even if you’re traveling long distances. These are the types of chargers you can typically find at charging stations rather than homes, as they’re designed to provide very rapid charging.

Which EV Charger is Right for You?

It depends on your needs! Again, all EVs come with a Level 1 Charger. If you want a charger that’s faster and more powerful, we can advise you on how to obtain a Level 2 Charger — the most prevalent charger, due to its speed and power — through Charged by Chevrolet. We can also educate you on how to use a Level 3 charger, should you ever need to use one during your long-distance travels.
